Starbound is for those students who want to make an extra commitment to dance. We are here to provide the joy of dance to all of our students at whatever level they choose, all the way from "just for fun" to "I want to dance professionally".
The Starbound students of Dance Dimensions frequently come out top overall winners at many regional competitions and, yes, even at the national level. We have had students place top overall at the international level. Winning is great, but learning is essential. And every competition is a performance opportunity.
Many of the leading competition studios require a nearly all consuming time requirement of their competition performance companies. We try to strike a moderate time commitment that allows students to have a life outside of dance. However excellence does require time and focus and when students are at the studio, we expect a 100% effort. A superior product does not come without a superior effort.
Performance company is a team environment, where mutual support is called for on and off the dance floor. Lifelong friendships have been forged and strengthened as the years unfold. Starbound is known for its comradery and community - it is for many an extended family.
Conventions and competitions are educational performance experiences. Exposing our students to nationally recognized teachers at conventions makes for an energizing experience that helps to light the fire of contagious enthusiasm.
Competitions are a clarion call to work on performance skills and understand what is required to make a performance stand out. There is also the opportunity to have professionals critique performances. Someone other than one's teacher pointing out weaknesses can be a "performance" changing experience.
Starbound members are required to attend several conventions and competitions every year. Any student in the studio can attend conventions with the studio and is encouraged to do so. We have recently added a competition class, Rising Stars, for younger students who are interested in competing and working towards becoming a member of Starbound.
Here are some of the competitions and conventions that we have attended in the past: L.A.D.F. , Hollywood VIBE, the Pulse, Jump, Urban Jamm, L.A. Elite, L.A. DanceMagic, Encore, Starquest, West Coast Dance Explosion, Monsters of Hip Hop, K.A.R., PrimeTime, Spotlight and others.
Every other summer, Starbound participates in nationals.
The Dance Dimensions Performance/Competition Group, Starbound, is made up of several levels. Placement and acceptance in the program is by audition. Presently Starbound is composed of four groupings or companies - Encore, Elite, Performance, Cadets. Starbound studies, performs and competes throughout the year. The Starbound competition groups and members have won recognition at the regional, national and international levels. The 4 companies are grouped by age, skill and style to form groups for the purposes of setting choreography and performance.
Rising Stars is a competition class for the 7 -12 year olds which is the perfect place to train for Starbound or to compete without the Starbound commitment.
If there is enough interest, we also will have a Shooting Stars competition company for teenagers, who want something more than recreational dance with some competing but not the level of commitment required for Starbound.
Starbound has existed for longer than Dance Dimensions has been in business, over 30 years. It was formed while Louise Leise was the Artistic Director of the Boulder City Dance Program.
Over the years many members of Starbound have gone on to dance professionally, teach and be involved in the dance world in many ways at the highest levels.
Every year in addition to Spring Concert and competitions, Starbound has a fundraiser performance, Starbound Dance Extravaganza. This year it was at the Longmont High School Auditorium on February 18th at 6:00 PM.
